Founded on 1 October 1933 as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) within the University of Mumbai, ICT was granted Deemed-to-be-University status on 12 September 2008 — making it India's only state-funded deemed university. ICT was conferred Category-I autonomy by UGC and the Ministry of Education in February 2018.

ICT has 16 academic departments offering UG, PG, MPhil and PhD programmes specialised in chemical engineering, chemical technology, dye-stuff and intermediates technology, fibres & textile processing, food engineering, oils, oleochemicals & surfactants, paints, perfumery and flavour, pharmaceutical sciences and technology, polymer engineering, and pharmacy. ICT is highly research-intensive and consistently ranks among the world's top institutions for chemical engineering.

ICT B.Tech (Chemical Engineering and allied) admissions follow Maharashtra state CET (MHT-CET) for 70% of seats and JEE Main for the remaining 30%, with counselling administered by DTE Maharashtra. ICT B.Pharm admits via MHT-CET. PG (M.Tech / M.Pharm / M.Sc) admissions follow GATE / GPAT with online applications via ictmumbaiadm.samarth.edu.in.
