About Smt. Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University
Smt. Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (SNDT Women's University), established on 5 June 1916 by Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve (the social reformer and Bharat Ratna recipient), is the first women's university in India and in South Asia. The university was established as the Indian Women's University, renamed in honour of its first benefactor Sir Vithaldas D. Thackersey's wife Nathibai. Headquartered at Churchgate, Mumbai with campuses at Pune and Juhu, SNDT received the status of state university through the SNDT Women's University Act 1951 (made an MH state university; previously a deemed-equivalent institution).
SNDT WU has 40+ teaching departments organised into 11 faculties — Arts, Education, Home Science, Social Work, Commerce, Library Science, Music & Fine Arts, Special Education, Computer Science, Management and Vocational Studies. It affiliates 50+ women's colleges. NAAC A grade accredited. Admits women candidates only (with some PhD and select PG programmes opening to all genders).
UG admissions through Plus Two merit or SNDT entrance. PG admissions through SNDT PG entrance or CUET PG for select departments. PhD through SNDT PET. Maharashtra state quota with women-only reservation; some programmes accept male candidates in supernumerary seats.
