Sambalpur University, established in 1967, is a state university located at Jyoti Vihar, Sambalpur (the major city of western Odisha). The university serves the western Odisha region — Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sonepur and Bolangir districts. Sambalpur University was named after the city/region of Sambalpur, an ancient seat of trade and culture.
