About Himalayan Garhwal University
Himalayan Garhwal University (HGU) was established in 2016 by the Himalayan Educational Society under the Uttarakhand State Legislature Act, with the explicit mandate of providing higher education access in the remote hill region of Pauri Garhwal. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and is approved by NCTE and BCI for its teacher education and law programmes respectively. The campus is located at Dhaid Gaon, Block-Pokhra, in the upper Garhwal hills approximately 50 km from Pauri town.
HGU offers programmes through its Schools of Education, Law, Computing, Management, Sciences, Liberal Arts, Agriculture and Commerce. Flagship programmes include BEd/D.El.Ed/MEd, BA-LLB/LLB/LLM, BBA/MBA, BCA/MCA, BSc (PCM/CBZ), BSc Agriculture, MSc, MA, MCom, BCom and PhD across disciplines. Admissions are largely based on qualifying examination merit, with university entrance test (HGU-EE) for select professional programmes and CLAT for law admissions.
Himalayan Garhwal University primarily serves students from the upper Garhwal region — Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi districts — where higher education access has historically been limited. The university focuses on teacher education, distance-friendly programmes, and skill-based courses suited to hill economies including organic agriculture and rural development. The campus offers hostels for boys and girls, central library, computer labs and transport linkage to Pauri.
