Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), Mohanpur, Nadia was established in 1974 by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly as the principal State Agricultural University of West Bengal — named after Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Accreditation Board. BCKV serves as the academic and research apex for agricultural science in West Bengal. The main campus is located at Mohanpur, Nadia, with research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the state.

BCKV operates through its Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Horticulture (at Mondouri campus), and Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. Programmes include BSc (Hons) Agriculture (4-year ICAR-approved), BSc (Hons) Horticulture, B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering, B.Tech in Dairy Technology, B.Tech in Food Technology; MSc (Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Horticulture, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Statistics, Plant Physiology, Microbiology, Agronomy, Floriculture, Vegetable Science, Fruit Science, Spices & Plantation Crops); MTech in Agricultural Engineering, Soil & Water Conservation; and PhD across all disciplines. Admissions for UG use ICAR AIEEA UG (CUET UG for agriculture) and the WB Joint Entrance for Agriculture (JEE-Agri); PG via ICAR AIEEA PG / university entrance.

BCKV is the principal agricultural research and extension institution of West Bengal, with research output covering rice (Boro/Aus/Aman varieties), jute, oilseeds, pulses, horticulture (mango, banana, pineapple, vegetables), spices, floriculture and inland fisheries. Its 19 Krishi Vigyan Kendras across the state transfer technology to farmers in West Bengal. Notable centres include the All India Coordinated Rice Research Project, the Centre for Floriculture & Landscaping, the Department of Plant Breeding (instrumental in releasing high-yielding rice and pulse varieties), and the AICRP on Vegetable Crops. The campus has separate hostels for boys and girls, central library, experimental farms, and the Mondouri Horticulture station spread over 150 acres.
