About Jadavpur University
Jadavpur University (JU), Kolkata was established in 1955 by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. It traces its origins to the National Council of Education, Bengal founded in 1906 as part of the Swadeshi movement, which later evolved into the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 and is one of India's premier state universities. JU operates from two campuses — the Jadavpur main campus and the Salt Lake campus, both in Kolkata, spread over a combined 110+ acres.
Jadavpur University comprises three faculties — Engineering & Technology, Arts, and Science. The Faculty of Engineering & Technology offers BE/BTech in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Telecom, Computer Science, Information Technology, Chemical, Construction, Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Technology, Production, Power, Metallurgy, Printing, Instrumentation, and Architecture (B.Arch), along with MTech, ME and PhD. The Faculty of Arts offers BA/MA in Bengali, English, Comparative Literature, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Economics, International Relations, Sociology, Geography, Film Studies (renowned globally), and Education. The Faculty of Science offers BSc/MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geological Sciences, Life Sciences (Plant Biology, Genetics, Physiology, Microbiology, Biotech). Admissions for engineering use WBJEE; arts and sciences via JEE-JU (university entrance) for select programmes plus qualifying merit; architecture via NATA/JEE Main Paper-2.
Jadavpur University is NAAC A+ accredited and has been an institution of national importance, ranked in the NIRF Top 10 University category since the rankings began. It is widely recognised for engineering excellence, the School of Film Studies (only such fully-fledged university film school in India), the Department of Comparative Literature (the first in India, started 1956), and research output across nuclear physics, optoelectronics, robotics, biotechnology and humanities. JU has produced two Nobel Laureates' connections (Mahasweta Devi was a faculty), several Padma Awardees, and globally recognised filmmakers and writers. Recruiters include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, ISRO, BARC, DRDO, IBM, Goldman Sachs, ITC, TCS and Tata Steel.
